Part of power outage mystery is solved

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP, 6/28/2006) - Chugach Electric officials have figured out the place of Sunday's large power outage, but not the cause.

Chugach spokesman Phil Steyer says a string of porcelain insulators shattered near the Fort Richardson exit off the Glenn Highway.

Tens of thousands of customers lost power on Sunday.

While the utility does not know what shattered the insulators, it could have been a lightning strike, even though no lightning was reported in the Anchorage area at the time.

The broken equipment will be sent to a national testing laboratory for analysis.

Just a topper to all the other drama here yesterday.

Edit: They have now decided it was probably a lightning strike...
