We don't get the 24 hour darkness here, just pretty short days. But the Aurora can be spectacular outside the city lights,*um but very cold and usually late at night. This time of year it's partytime for a lot of people, some diehards even in the rain. At least the mosquitoes aren't so bad.
That is what I hear... need really clear, cold nights for the best Aurora. Gotcha on the darkness... Still it must be weird, but cool to experience. Not sure if I could handle a lifetime... but that is what experiences show you. :)
Actually the dark is never really dark like in the south where dark is pitch black. It's softer and you can see.I guess it's because of the moon or maybe the snow but even without, not blackness.Hard to explain, the sun is very bright in the winter and only up for 4or 5 hours midwinter. The sun sets but it's still light out in the summer. I guess it would be weird if I hadn't grown up with it.The absolute blackness in the lower 48 just freaked me out.The openness of the night sky too.
The absolute blackness in the lower 48 just freaked me out.The openness of the night sky too. See when I head back upstate from hell NYC, I love seeing the stars and the clear night skies. It's one thing I really miss down here in NYC... you can find trees and grass and outdoors, but the night sky isn't ever found with all the light pollution.
It sounds fun and a full year should tell ya if ya can handle it or not... too bad I highly doubt I'll have the opportunity of a full year in Alaska... but definitely some vacation up there one day!
Interesting on the never full dark... that would be slightly weird, but cool. :)
Our longest day was yesterday - still twilight at 10.30pm, but chilly. Now the nights should start to get longer and warmer, which is the perfect combination for sitting out and star gazing *g*.
Same here but the difference is something like 25 seconds a day this week.So we get about a week of the longest day which kinda makes up for the 5 minate a day loss thereafter.or it would if it just stops raining and the winds change direction. Sounds lovely where you are ,not much stargazing here in the summer.
Of course it's raining. The hubby and I are going away for the first time in two years and guess what it's gonna do the whole time? Oh well. The weather can do what it wants. I'll be away from home and work so I'll be happy.

Hard to sleep but lots of fun
