I Guess I'm not so weird after all

I learned a new word today "taphophile" from ckr .
I don't take rubbings or pictures,I am not that dedicated. I just like to experience the peace and history I get when I go out to look at the older foot and headstones.I feel sometimes we spend so much time trying to record an event or pin down a feeling we can totally miss the experience.
I have to say my most cherished memories are so much better than the photos or videos I have of them.
Now I am not saying I don't take pictures, just that I'd rather not miss out on the feelings and impressions I have at those moments in time, photos just don't do justice most of the time.
As we were traveling across country a few years ago we came to a very old cemetery and I made them all picnic there with me there ( my version of tailgate). Then we just wandered through for a little while.It was amazing, out in the middle of back of beyond doesn't even come close to describing it, no gate or fence, not even a sign.
I asked them all to be quiet for just a moment and just see it, feel the history of the people gone on before.They were all quiet and stood there breathing in the wonderful clean country air and the historical significance, all in all a wonderful family teaching moment.
Then my oldest son then about 13 piped up and said "That's great Mom where's the Frisbee!"
Okay maybe I am just weird after all.

I found a new cemetery (new to me!) the other week and as soon as I can, I'm off to explore. :)

There are not a lot of very old places of any kind here.I do want to go back to this one , Native Russian Orthodox, with spirit houses.Years ago there were goods in them but no more, tourist like to take home souvenirs even if they aren't for sale. Sad.
