Has anyone actually read the Health Care Choices Act?
I'm not really bothered by this because it only affects my family slightly (with the exception of possibly being double billed for insurance premiums) but many may have some very unpleasant surprises if this passes as written and I've only reached Title IV.
I'm not sure it's what many people think it is.

Gawd it gave me a headache and I'm gonna have to read it again and find all the new additions.

What - exactly - bothers

A couple of things. the IRS will be involved and after Five years they can decide we have to give up our employer provided insurance to buy theirs, if they decide it doesn't meet some undetermined (as yet) criteria.
Insurance will be required. If you opt out of the three (I think it was three; Basic, Enhanced and Premium) proposed plans you would be charged 2.5% of your adjusted gross income and placed on what seems to be a Medicaid plan.(My oldest daughter went through that for a while and was more than happy to get her employer provided insurance even if she did have to pay out for it)
From the summary
III. SHARED RESPONSIBILITY The bill creates shared responsibility among individuals, employers and government to ensure that all Americans have affordable coverage of essential health benefits.
Individual responsibility. Except in cases of hardship, once market reforms and affordability credits are in effect, individuals will be responsible for obtaining and maintaining health insurance coverage. Those who choose to not obtain coverage will pay a penalty of 2.5 percent of modified adjusted gross income above a specified level.

Doesn't define hardship or specified level.
The main reason for reading this is I am getting very tired of people telling me what they think it is or isn't.
After reading it I don't think the people who are against it are mean spirited, selfish or evil nor do I think the people for it are saintly, unselfish and good.
I think people really need to take a good long look at this, the cost and what it may mean in the future.
The sections in the one I linked to will highlight making them a little easier to read and the comments are both dumb and enlightening. I can see how some things can be read into the wording that could be quite disturbing.
After reading it I can see what it is not, it does not seem to be a socialized medicine plan or a universal health care package, you will have to buy insurance, pick a plan you can afford and pay the premiums ),only now you will have little choice as to what sort of plan you may get,one that may not get you vision or dental.
I really do need to read it again, but all the addendum, add- ons and the cost numbers seem so staggeringly unreal to the point that this bill also repeals the Balanced Budget Act.
It would seem to me that the paperwork alone(it also repeals some sort of paperwork reduction act in there somewhere I can't find it now) will take years to get to the point of anyone even knowing what to fill out.
I am going to read through it again after I get rid of the headache this caused the first time to see if I can understand it better. I would suggest everyone read through this and really look at what all has been put in it. Forget the buzz words the liberals and conservatives are using and find the truth somewhere in the middle.

I really look forward to your 'work' on this - I missed the penalty part altogether! Thank YOU for the explanation - hard work - and due diligence! My brain sure can't ferret through it if I missed that important part!

Well I don't really understand most of it. There is so much crammed into it I'm not sure they will get it to pass as written and if they do how they will ever implement it.
That's the problem with these bills, politicians want to try and sneak in as much as they can of the stuff that wouldn't pass on it's on merit, then accuse people who stand against it as evil and selfish because they want to stop people from getting proper health care, want to keep the poor downtrodden, etc (which I don't think is true for many people, they just think this plan won't work so it needs to not pass so they can come up with something better, simpler etc), and the people opposing them run around acting like the sky is falling(socialized medicine, government run hospitals,we're all gonna have to buy Government provided Insurance because all the real companies will fold and research will stop, etc),diverting attention from the real issues at hand. Which would be affordable health insurance. I really think we should listen to both sides with a rather large grain of salt and walk somewhere down the middle, that will probably be where the truth resides.
Conservatives and Liberals alike.gah! They all need to get a grip. I guess I will never understand why people can't agree to disagree without name-calling and finger pointing. The news shows sound like Junior High School lunchrooms with the opposing group trying desperately to recruit favor from anyone that is willing listen and jump in on their side without even thinking about what it all means.
Just because someone's world view or opinion is different from mine doesn't make them stupid, evil, uninformed or even wrong, it makes them different, unique and very precious.

What's also amazing (and one of the reasons I love watching shows like the Daily Show and even Rachel Maddow) is how often one thing is bad when it's the product of the *other* party, but good when it's *our* party's idea. *rolls eyes*

Both shows do a great job of showing both parties falling victim to this. And it's very funny in a "this will doom us" kind of way! LOL!

Oh well, the Mayan calendar cycle ends on Dec 21, 2012 and some people think it means the world is ending anyway. That would probably be before they get this in place at any rate.*snerk

ROTFLOL! Very true! And by the time it *does* get anywhere, it will look entirely different from the way it's written now! LOL!

What unpleasant surprises? (If you don't mind summarizing, that is.)

Everyone will be required to purchase Federally approved health insurance and the IRS involvement gives me the heebiejeebies.
Also see above where I answered.

Thank you.

It's going to be a clusterfuck, for sure, at very the least.

Just another way to keep track of everyone, I guess. sigh.

Scary.
