Ooh, I love 13--it somehow manages to get Rose looking vulnerable (which doesn't happen all that often) and hot (which is her normal state) at the same time. I also really like the Dalek ones.

I totally need to figure out how to get those groovy color effects!!

Glad you like them.I like to make the Rose icons, she's like the guppy a great face with everything showing right there.
Which color effects? It's mostly textures and the bright ones have a turquoise saturation layer.

Well okay--what are "textures" and how does one apply them? Also what does "turquose saturation layer" mean?

I do know about how to use layers, and I've done cutting things out of the background image, copying them to their own layer and then modifying the crap out of the background image so that the cut out bit stands out. (Like in the icon I'm using). I can even *de*saturate.

But that's pretty much the extent of my skills, so I'm getting frustrated because I can't make icons that look the way I want...

In [livejournal.com profile] icon_tutorial there is a list of tips and instruction tutorials for GIMP here
http://tinyurl.com/zjx2m
Since I have never seen that program I'm not sure how to help but I'll answer anything I can.
Basically you copy and paste textures and/or flood fill layers with differnent colors with differing settings for effect.Mostly mine are trial and error (mostly error).
Maybe this list will help.

Ooh, that is a pretty texture--how do I use it? :)

And thanks for finding me a GIMP tutorial--I went out to look into getting Photoshop today and realized that my sense that it would be prohibitively expensive is accurate.

You have been inspiring me muchly and I'm working on an icon now that will be much more bright and pretty and, you know, nice!!

Thanks thanks!!

You are welcome,I saw the blue blair very pretty.
I'm not sure how to apply textures in GIMP.Maybe I'll download it to play with.
I'm using PS 5.5 a hand me down from my hubby's webmaster days.

The GIMP isn't easy to figure out--but it's terribly powerful and the price can't be beat. It can do all sorts of things I simply don't understand (and consequently can't use). I'm fiddling with the texture now. :)

Ms. IconTutor, ma'am. I have a question for you.

The rules for [livejournal.com profile] ts_stills state, in part:

4. You can only use the images given to you. No blending of images (unless otherwise stated). Brushes, borders, text, color, etc., are allowed.

I get that this means that I can't use bits of other pictures, but does this also mean I can't use that neat-o texture that you shared with me? I still haven't had a chance to play with that and try to figure out how best to use it, but I'd like to.

On the other hand, I've already got one icon made for the current [livejournal.com profile] ts_still challenge and have ideas for two others. So this is mostly for future reference.

Thanks!!

You can use borders, masks, textures, gradients, brushes, text, anything you have in your bag of graphic tricks. The only things you can't do is animate or add in another picture not from the picture provided.
No manipulations,or copy and pasting from another picture to add a person not in the original picture.
Sorry about long windedness just started on my first cup of coffee, not quite coherent yet....
The icon used here demonstrates pretty much everything you can't do.

So that texture doesn't count as "adding in another picture" even though it's its own separate graphics file?

Huh.

Okay.

So if I took a very, erm, textur-y slice out of a screencap that had no people in it and I used it like a texture (still working on that) would that be kosher or no?

I haven't quite worked out the brushes thing yet, or masks (though masks seem like they'd be all kinds of groovy!). Gradients I'm *lousy* with and usually they just muddy things up, but I'm still fiddling there.

Now, if I felt sufficiently confident and energetic, could I take one of the images provided and move the two people in it closer together or farther apart? So manipulate the folks that are already there so they're in different places relative to one another?
