Date: 2006-08-04 11:21 am (UTC)From:I do know about how to use layers, and I've done cutting things out of the background image, copying them to their own layer and then modifying the crap out of the background image so that the cut out bit stands out. (Like in the icon I'm using). I can even *de*saturate.
But that's pretty much the extent of my skills, so I'm getting frustrated because I can't make icons that look the way I want...

Since I have never seen that program I'm not sure how to help but I'll answer anything I can.
Basically you copy and paste textures and/or flood fill layers with differnent colors with differing settings for effect.Mostly mine are trial and error (mostly error).
Maybe this list will help.
This is a texure(one of my faves btw) made by

Date: 2006-08-05 01:57 am (UTC)From:And thanks for finding me a GIMP tutorial--I went out to look into getting Photoshop today and realized that my sense that it would be prohibitively expensive is accurate.
You have been inspiring me muchly and I'm working on an icon now that will be much more bright and pretty and, you know, nice!!
Thanks thanks!!

4. You can only use the images given to you. No blending of images (unless otherwise stated). Brushes, borders, text, color, etc., are allowed.
I get that this means that I can't use bits of other pictures, but does this also mean I can't use that neat-o texture that you shared with me? I still haven't had a chance to play with that and try to figure out how best to use it, but I'd like to.
On the other hand, I've already got one icon made for the current
Thanks!!

Sorry about long windedness just started on my first cup of coffee, not quite coherent yet....
The icon used here demonstrates pretty much everything you can't do.

Okay.
So if I took a very, erm, textur-y slice out of a screencap that had no people in it and I used it like a texture (still working on that) would that be kosher or no?
I haven't quite worked out the brushes thing yet, or masks (though masks seem like they'd be all kinds of groovy!). Gradients I'm *lousy* with and usually they just muddy things up, but I'm still fiddling there.
Now, if I felt sufficiently confident and energetic, could I take one of the images provided and move the two people in it closer together or farther apart? So manipulate the folks that are already there so they're in different places relative to one another?
